Opinions Versus Facts
Everybody has the right to their own opinions--nobody has the right to their own facts. All of us can excercise our freedom to express our opinion about anything but it does not necessarily mean we have the right to our own facts. An opinion is completely different from a fact. Facts are verifyablle; something that has actual existence having objective reality. On the other hand, an opinion is about one's view or judgment formed in the mind about a particular matter or event.
Some people will try to control you with their own opinions about you and if you submit to it the result can be devastating. Do you know of somebody who has the nerve to frankly tell you what he or she thinks about you? How you respond is very important especially when the confrontation is no longer comfortable to bear. You see, there are people who are really good at manipulating others with what they call their "opinion". Their agenda is to tear you down and steal your peace;something they do not have! They will talk to you in the guise of a "friendly advise" but their true motive is to control and devastate you. Be careful with the craftiness and smooth schemes of people around us. Much more, be careful with people you allow to enter into your life!
Proverbs 12:20 tells us,"He who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm." Very true! I believe this words of wisdom applies to friendships, the people around us, and with good reason. As I explained earlier, our friends and people we hang out with affect us tremendously. Be careful whom you consider as your intimate friends or business associates. We and our friends will surely grow to resemble each other.
Before you run and listen to the opinions of others especially about your personal problems, think twice! We go first to our friends for advise because we think that they will accept us and agree with us, that is why we find out that they are not able to help us with our difficult problems. Like us, they do not have any answers we haven't already heard. What you would like to do is to seek out older, credible, and wise people to give us counsel. We need to talk to Godly people who can warn us of the dangers and pitfalls ahead. Don't listen to the advises of people who can't help themselves. Sometimes the negative opinions of other people about you is about "jealousy". Some people just cannot stand to see you happy. They want you to feel, look and think miserable as they are.
Listen to what is true and factual. Ignore the people whose full time job is going around slandering and maligning the character and reputation of thers. The Bible teaches us to stay away from them (again, not hate them) and refuse to let them influence and affect our lives. We are to love them but we should never allow them to control our decisions and choices we make in life. We need not try to defend ourselves from those who slander and gossip us because doing so will only be futile. Instead, commit your frustrations and disappointments to the God of all comfort. God is our Defender and Vindicator. He surely is the only Way because there is no other way!
